A Look Back at 2008-2009 by Cody Cheek, TLVA President
In its second year, TLVA took significant strides towards fulfilling its founding goals. By dramatically increasing its budget and membership, TLVA was able to coordinate and orchestrate new organizational events. These events—all very successful—have helped increase the student and faculty awareness over TLVA. In both semesters, TLVA was able to utilize a variety of resources to help assist military veterans in Travis County. First and foremost, TLVA co-sponsored two “Helpers for Heroes” veterans intake clinics. At these clinics, military veterans were provided free legal assistance from local volunteer attorneys. TLVA members assisted in several capacities during the clinics, including interviewing each veteran to help spotlight their specific needs and helping veterans complete their in-processing paperwork. During the Spring Semester, TLVA chaired a symposium titled “In The Boots of a Soldier.” To prepare for the symposium, TLVA members researched the key legal issues facing current military veterans. These issues were streamlined into a single presentation outlining the challenges facing soldiers once they leave the military. Presenting each of these issues through the fictional character of “Staff Sergeant Bevo,” TLVA members were able to educate the audience over many current veterans issues. TLVA also provided one of the main social highlights of each semester through the “Dining-In Ceremony.” The “Dining-In Ceremony” allowed all TLVA members to gain a perspective into a traditional military event. The event included dinner, dancing, singing, and a variety of games and challenges. Initially planned for the Fall Semester, the “Dining-In” was such a success that it was replicated in the Spring. As a capstone to the year, TLVA was profiled in the most recent issue of the UT Law Alumni Magazine. The article summarized the events, accomplishments, and goals of the TLVA. The article has received nothing but positive feedback and will hopefully provide a further stepping stone for the organization as it moves forward. This upcoming year, TLVA hopes to build off these past successes. The organization is continuing to grow and seeks to further expand its outreach across the UT Campus and Austin Community. In only its third year of existence, the organization is quickly becoming one of the most well-known and respected organizations at the law school. #### |
